Occupations "In Demand" in Washington State

For every county in the state, find out if an occupation is in demand, balanced, or not in demand

by Trends Staff

The 2021 Occupations in Demand data visualization by the Washington State Employment Security Department, Labor Market and Economic Analysis is one of the oldest data visualizations we have chosen to feature in “Trends in the News”.

Saying it is among the oldest does not mean the information is old. The data behind the visualization is updated annually, but the dashboard itself will be 5-years old this upcoming November. It has been viewed nearly one-quarter million times since being created.

5-years might seem young, but not in the world of presenting data visually. Infographics still serve an important need and are certain to make the Data Presentations Hall-of-Fame. But the static nature of infographics can be boring compared to data visualizations, and do not let a user dig into deeper layers of data. On the flip side, data visualizations do not work so well on a highway billboard.

The 2021 Occupations in Demand dashboard has three results for a selected occupation: in demand, not in demand, and balanced. Occupations are selected from a dropdown menu of occupations and the counties on a county map of Washington State will change color based on the 2021 demand.

While the dashboard updates annually, it only offers current year data. No past or historical data is available.
