4.1.1 Life Expectancy at Birth
Why is this important?
In nearly all surveys of quality of life, nationally and internationally, life expectancy is seen as a key indicator. The desire for a long life is universal. Changes in this measure reflect medical, social, public health, and economic phenomena. Consequently, it provides a summary outcome measure of a society or region's success in providing its residents with goods and services essential for good health. The measure also rests on the capacity and expertise of the region's medical community.
This indicator measures the life expectancy at birth in Walla Walla County. It represents the average number of years that infants born in a given year would live if those infants were to experience the same age-specific death rates present in their birth year. Washington State is offered as a benchmark.
