6.1.3 Total Firearm Related Deaths and Rate per 100,000 Residents
Why is this important?
Firearm deaths are defined as firearm-related deaths occurring from a homicide, suicide, or under unintentional circumstances. These three categories are universal across law enforcement and other entities within the criminal justice system, such as prosecutors and coroners, as well as other organizations tracking and reporting on firearm-related deaths.
The national statistics used for comparability across type of all deaths from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed 33,594 deaths to firearms in 2014, just behind 33,736 motor vehicle-related traffic deaths. The CDC also reports during 2016 for national firearm-related deaths statistics, there were 38,551 firearm-related deaths across the U.S.
This indicator measures the total firearm deaths in Walla Walla County. Washington State is offered as a benchmark.
