1.4.5 Total Number of Wineries & Annual Growth Rate
Why is this important?
Wineries are a booming business for Washington State. According to the Washington State Wine Commission, the Evergreen State is the second-largest premium wine (wines sold for $8 or higher) producer in the United States, with more than 940 wineries and 350 wine grape growers. These growers produce more than 70 varieties of wine, with Riesling being the top white and Cabernet Sauvignon being the top red statewide. The state now counts 19 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas).
According to the Washington State Wine Commission, the Walla Walla Valley American viticultural area (AVA) has the “highest concentration of wineries in Washington". Red grapes are the top producers in the area, with Cabernet Sauvignon variety the dominant varietal, which is also true for the state as a whole. The Walla Walla AVA crosses the Oregon-Washington border with roughly 2/3 of the approximate 330,000 acres located in Washington State.
