Why is this important?
Water is an essential resource for people, the environment, and the economy. In order to analyze water use and come up with goals for use that meet the needs of both people and the environment, community leaders need to know how much is used each year.
Water use varies throughout the year. Summer months contribute to peak demand for irrigation and lawn watering. The amount consumed for these activities varies with rainfall during these months, defined here as May through September. We include annual inches of summer rainfall as a possible explanation for the variation in annual water consumption.
This indicator measures the number of gallons of water (in billions) pumped or "produced" annually for all uses in the City of Walla Walla and the percent that is lost due to system leakage. The percent lost to leakage in Spokane, Washington is offered as a benchmark.
