The United States Census Bureau provides more data than one may realize. Their recently published Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey (HTOPS) contains a section on Consumption of Arts and Entertainment, and this provides a look into the art Americans are consuming.
Released in early March of this year, the survey contains information on the past month. Over the previous four weeks, an estimated 50 million adults attended a live music, dance, or theater performance, making it the most popular activity measured. Another 46 million went to the movies, while 23 million attended an art exhibit. In-person cultural events remain a staple of daily life!
The survey also found that participation varied by education and income. Participants with a bachelor’s degree or higher were more likely to attend movies, live performances, and art exhibits than those with lower educational attainment. Similarly, attendance increased across the board as household income increased. This tracks the idea that socioeconomic factors will impact desire or ability to access art and entertainment.
